Hello,

I started my business April 2005- I had NO customers when I started! I got on line did some networking (which I need to do more of) I also went and knocked on doors of local businesses. I would say even yet today I am not up to my full potential and would like a few more clients, but I have plenty to do. Each year I earn more money and get a new client or 2-3.

Being a virtual assistant, I have gotten clients from other va's who need to pass on work, I also sub for a few of them too.

How did I get my clients? Well 1) Networking, 2) Networking 3) Networking 4) advertising Craigslist, Guru and a few others, 5) Networking.

Please feel free to contact me should you need any other ideas.

I would like to know when you started your business:

I started my Business in the summer of 2003 when I created spelling software for any age.

How long it took before your business really jump off:

I wouldn’t say it has really jumped off yet. I know I have created a great product. I am number one on all the search engines for the search term "Spelling Software". I have had a student that competed in the national spelling bee on ESPN use my product and write to me about how it helped them so much. Currently I created a retail version of my product and had 1000 copies made. Now I need to look for resellers. I may create a post and ask what the best way is to find resellers.

How did you target the customers you have now:

I get most of my customers by search engines and word of mouth. I have a lot of parents that say they heard of my software from other parents. One thing I need to work on is marketing. I know I have a great product. I just need to get it to those that can benefit from it.

I have been online for two years with my own website and it is now after two years of promoting my website and networking that things are slowly turning around.
I also found that by contracting out my hours with data entry for two different online employers, it gives me a paycheck so that first I have a cash flow but second that I have money to invest back in my business.

I would say like today when I was least looking I came in contact with a person I will do business with. I also have made today a connection for work locally.

Just keep working and day to day promote your business with a passion and a smile.

Well, when we started our traditional medical cost containment corporation in 1991, it was 6 LONG months of flying all over kissing butt and doing sales. ;-0

With our home based business with Melaleuca when we started 5 years ago, it was about 2 weeks...

We really don't have to do any "targeting" now. We ALL shop somewhere for household necessities, and most prefer going GREEN and paying less....

Hope this helps!

Hi Sharon,

I started in 2005 and took little time to get clients with my networking, writing content on the web, offering to speak where my target market would be... BUT FIRST...

1) I identified my target market very precisely - for example, for me just being a coach was not precise enough, being an entrepreneur coach still not... then selecting entrepreneurs who deal with overwhelm and procrastination in their business... now that's precise.

You do this because...

2) You need to become an expert of your target market's area - understand their needs... find out what they read, where they congregate... understand their problems so that...

3) You can develop solutions to their specific problems.

That works very well... people are looking for specialists. Also specialising puts you in the minds of people when they hear about someone with the problems you have solutions for. Finally, it's a lot easier and definitely cheaper to market to a target market than to the mass market.

I don't know if I dreamed this quote up or did I hear it somewhere, anyway...
when you talk to everyone, you SPEAK to no one.

Oh and to answer your question, it took approximately 6 months to have a somewhat decent revenue. Now almost 3 years later, I'm turning down clients because I have no time to talk to all. I'm now developing other products for those people. ;-)

Hope this helps!

Linda

Sorry so late in the reply, but our business has been crasy busy so I don't get into all my Networks on a regular basis.

We diversified to CDM after the field (medical cost containment) we had a corporation in DIED and we lost a small fortune in MLMS, and that was May 17, 2002. We saw a really good profit our first month and it's been ongoing for almost 6 years.

NOW... let's back up to the corporation tho. We invested $80,000 in 1991 to start our corporation, and we paid employees and contract labor ON TIME.. but WE didn't get our first check for about 12 months....

Every business takes time to build a solid foundation.

Hope this helps!! Wishing you total business success!!
