salvador jore | | How about we dedicate this thread to ideas for starting a home based business? Just post an idea you may have, it may not be the right idea for you, but it may be great for someone else!
Here are the points:
1. Find a local manufacturer of products that ship well through couriers, and start and ecommerce website.
2. Define your hobby. Start a content website that you keep updated daily, or at least weekly. If you have a niche market, you may do well with ads!
3. Provide a service to local businesses. For example you can do some accounting from home.

This called "Affiliate Marketing".
It is not necessary to find a local, there are many such opportunities online.
If you do find a local manufacturer you will have to have a sale tracking process in place.
If you go with this kind of business you will need to budget for advertising or have a high traffic site.

Hobby sites can be built into high traffic portals.
Income can be from ads (Google's AdSense), affilitate sales, or banner advertising.
Usually possible to rank well in the search engines' organic rankings.

While local is a possibility, why think local?
If you can do it for locals, you can do it globally also.

Better yet, provide a product or service that no one else CAN.
Focusing on your local market is a good idea. It lets you come up with products and services that have limited potential competition. For example, it's REAL hard to provide plumbing services over the Internet.
My particular niche is selling motor scooters. Yes, I know, people can buy motor scooters over the Internet. But what happens when they break (or don't work right in the first place)? That's how I differentiate myself from everybody else - by providing repair services after the sale, as well as giving people the ability to see how a particular model fits them. (The ability to kick tires is worth a premium.)
Whatever you do, approach it as a business and not a "hobby". Put together a business plan, and be prepared to invest the time, energy, and MONEY to make the business successful. Also be prepared to make adjustments when things don't go according to your plan.

But - has anyone considered that in providing services, eg: plumbing, or motorbike repair or asphalt paving, the service provider has accumulated a wealth of specialized knowledge.....knowledge that people globally may be seeking....and be willing to pay for. ;o)
Take asphalt paving, for example. Kinda specialized and very localized territory - right?
Not only that - in Montreal - there's a few (lots) of months each year when the business has to be shut-down. Ice & snow & rain happens.
Well - there is a former asphalt paver I know about, who took his specialized knowledge to the Web. He built a business giving pointers on paving and gradually building up to supplying related equipment world-wide. He actually sold specialized paving machinery to the US Military in the Mid-East, for example.
As I understand it, he is 'running his internet business' from a Caribbean island....far from snowy Canada these days. :o)
It's amazing the power of the internet....and the leverage it can give each of us.
Anyway - just thought this added dimension might be helpful.

Lori Jones | | Understand, that it takes a little money to make a lot of money. If you think you can start a business, with no start up capital and make 20,000 to 30,000 a month and much, much, more without capital & time you may be disappointed. It takes dedication, commitment, & hard work to build a network. It doesn't come easy, that's why the failure rate is so high, but if you are the type of person who can stick with it, the rewards are great & lifechanging!

Rachel deHar | | I think passion is a huge contributing factor to business success. If you are not passionate about what your doing then you will eventually lose the desire to succeed.
Passion helps to motivate, inspire and push us into working hard to achieve our ultimate business goals. When you are in the initial phases of deciding what you want to do, what market you want to target and what direction you want your business to go in, try and think long term.
Is this something you could imagine doing in 10 years time and still enjoy doing it? Can you dedicate many hours of hard work to get it up and running?
Once you have established these things then you need to decide what it is you are passionate about....Do you want to provide a product or a service? Where do your strengths lie? Do you want to work directly with people? Or have an online business?
Starting your own business is not easy but if your motivated to seeing it succeed then it's worth all the hard work.

It makes everything so worthwhile when you love what you do. I also think it resonates strongly to your clients aswell. If they can feel the passion and drive from you it certainly makes for a credible and exciting product or service.

One very important thing we need to keep in mind is the scale. What starts as a passion or a hobby or even a very smart idea has to have a long term vision.
We need to be very clear about the distinction between self employment and business. What we fondly call as business is effectively self-employment, because the money stops when we stop working. I urge all you to think beyond and think long term.
Build a business where we can offer employment to others and scale up the operations. I have gone through all the turmoil of gathering like minded passionate people. It is very difficult, but can be done.
Have that vision and work towards that. You never know, may be you are holding a potential future GE in your hands!It is criminal to put a cap on a great idea because we could not dream big or did not dare to dream big.

Dorez Douglas | | If a person wants to explore the possibilities for a business or service, you could do a focus group. But make it more fun and informal. If you're a member of an organization or social group, get them together (at your home or rent a small facility). Have a discussion about what kinds of goods or services they would be interested in. You could even do a focus group with family and/or friends. It might help stimulate your creative juices.
If I think of other ideas, I'll throw them in the mix.

What we have boiled it down to is we prefer low startup costs, little or no inventory, we prefer not to have to handle training too many folks (limits our interest in most mlm/network opportunities), and something that we know, want to know, or have a passion for.
We have looked for a lot of years and have found what we think will work for us, and for just about anyone, mostly because it is about you, what you like and know, and not any specific product or business.
We have been building a website about an area we are familiar with, and even though it started out as a means of developing leads for an mlm, but we are beginning to see that our mlm is merely another of the multitude of ways to make money from a website, not our primary source, maybe not even secondary.
The web is an incredible place to build and develop a business with low cost, low maintenance after the initial setup, and no need to have any inventory for many businesses.
