bradley luke | | I am currently using Quickbooks for another business but not using it for my ecommerce retail music book business. I'm tracking everything manually at this point but am trying to make a decision on accounting software and the inventory aspect is my main area of concern. It seems that Quickbooks' lack of costing methodolgies (uses average cost only rather than LIFO/FIFO options) is a serious drawback since our product costs do fluctuate from time to time. In my research of Peachtree, I see that it is more flexible and allows other cost methodologies. Can anyone else share your experience in regard to this issue tell me about any other accounting software that you might recommend for a small retail business? Thanks.

Angelo Cerase | | As much as it pains me to suggest a Microsoft product, but MS has a new accounting program called MS Accounting. There is a free basic version available for download, and a paid version with more options.
This is a new product, and may or may not have the features you're looking for.

Second, with the MS Accounting software it says that it is free however it is not. After 30 days (I think that is the time frame) you have to pay for it so technically you only have a taste of what you're getting.
In my opinion, something you might want to consider is QuickBooks or ACT! If not mistaken you can download trials of both before purchase. The most valuable thing to consider is something that does exactly what you need and when you need it. A tall order perhaps but not impossible to fulfill.

I was accompanying my friend to a computer supermarket today and she was looking for MYOB...it is an accounting software that is popular in Singapore. What a pun for this network.
Just go to google to do a search and type myob. there is an office in USA.
At the supermarket, the sales staff explained that there are 3 versions. And one is specifically tailored for retail.

Christine Richmond | | You perhaps need a QB 'expert' to set up your item costs so that you can track inventory - I use it in the UK for a photographic agency and it's no big deal provided you set it up properly. If your item costs change, you just edit the individual items - perhaps if you contact QB help direct, or ask the question on one of the QB forums you will get more specific help but I can't see why you are having problems tracking stock - QB is great at that. Try looking on the QB/Intuit website and follow the links to the forums or help questions.

Carrie Edwards | | I'm using Microsoft Accounting and it's wonderful. It's working very well for me and there is NO expiration on the free software. You can upgrade at anytime or stick with the Express version.
So far, I haven't found any reason to upgrade and am using the express version for my VA business. It's working great. I can keep track of who owes what as well as print, or e-mail invoices and track payments for various types of services.

I think the question is somewhat backward. In my experience, most commercial software is viable and capable of performing the tasks required to organize a small business's books, keep accurate records, produce the required financial statements etc.
However, as with most good TOOLS, the value of the tools is not intrinsic to the tool, but rather depends on the skill, experience and expertise of the professional using the tool. One of my personal pet peeves is the dependence we have developed on technology to replace or diminish the value of expertise.
I would frame the question more along the lines of:
Does anyone have any recommendations for good financial and accounting professionals who can provide the expertise and experience we need to manage and grow our business?
That should come first, whether it is for hiring an internal CFO, finding a CPA/CPA Firm that fits your needs and/or finding the right consultant to help frame your needs so that you and your accounting professionals can make a technology choice that is the best fit for you and your company.
I also think it is important to look at more than just the selection and implementation of a software solution, but also consider the needs and flexibility to provide the best information that will allow you to make good decisions on a continuous basis as you manage the growth of your company.
