The cost of a "free" website is typically someone else's ads on your site. Having someone else control what goes on part of your site is not a smart business choice. It is like telling someone else they can do whatever they want in the corner of your brick and mortar store - will they set up in competition with you, make you look cheap, ruin your reputation, etc? Ads on your site that you cannot control can do all of that, as well as making you look uncommitted, and unprofessional.
And, as has been suggested, you always have to look for the hidden cost, because it will always be there somewhere.
